Candle Safety & Care Guide

Candle Safety

  • Always place your candle on a stable, level surface away from draughts such as open windows, fans or air conditioning units, but in a well ventilated space.

  • Always keep your candle away from flammable items such as curtains, papers, bedding.

  • The candle vessel can become warm when lit so ensure that any surface that it is placed on in heat resistant and not flammable. This is particularly important with tealight samples that do become hot, place them in or on a suitable vessel.

  • Ensure that your lit candle cannot be accessed by pets or children. Check with a qualified veterinary professional if you are unsure whether a fragrance is suitable for use around pets, birds and aquatic pets.

  • Never burn a candle on or near a secondary heat source such as a radiator or log burning fire, this can cause overheating of the glass candle vessel and risk of explosion and damage/fire risk.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended and it is advisable to extinguish by removing the oxygen source with a candle snuff rather than by blowing it out as this can result in hot liquid wax being blown out of the candle vessel. Ensure that the extinguished wick has stopped glowing before leaving it unattended.

Candle Care

  • The cotton wick has been pre-trimmed ready for lighting so no need to do anything else prior to lighting it.

  • When lit, always allow the top layer of wax to melt all the way to the vessel, this will typically take 2-3 hours. Plant based waxes have a 'memory' and if you only burn for a short time and don't allow the melt pool to reach the edges, particularly on the first burn, the candle will follow the initial melt pool on subsequent burns which can result in tunnelling where the candle never melts all the way to the edge.

  • Do not burn any candle for more than 3 hours at a time, this will optimise the performance and will ensure that it burns as safely as possible.

  • If you are burning more than one candle, ensure that candles are places at least three inches apart to ensure that they don't heat each other up.

  • Never pick up or carry a burning/still hot candle as there is a risk or burns/fire.

  • Following the first burn and the candle has set solid again, the top may not be as smooth as it was when you first received it, this is normal for plant based waxes and does not affect the performance of the candle.

  • Prior to lighting the candle again, please trim the wick using a pair of scissors or a wick trimmer to 1/4 inch long before lighting again, leaving the wick too long can result in the candle burning too hot or with too large a flame. Do this each time before you re-light it and check that the top of the candle is free of any debris such as matches or trimmed off pieces of wick.

  • Never burn a candle all the way to the bottom of the vessel so that the metal wick sustainer is exposed, always leave 1/4 inch of wax in the bottom for safety. See separate instructions provided with candle refills regarding the removal of this left over wax and the wick/sustainer.

  • If a candle is ever repeatedly smoking, or has a large flame, extinguish the flame and allow to cool before trimming the wick and re-lighting. It will only be doing this if the wick has not been trimmed or if it is in a draft, so check both.
